What We Do
The Friends of the Desert Park support the Park in a variety of meaningful ways:
Publications
- My Desert Diary — a book based on the informative animal and bird signage around the Park, available at the Desert Park Shop and other outlets in Alice Springs.
- A series of 10 flora and fauna art prints, created from the same original artwork, also available at the Desert Park Shop.
Fundraising and Support
- We raise funds to purchase equipment and resources that directly assist the Park.
- We purchased and maintain a fleet of electric scooters to support visitors with mobility needs.
- We contribute to staff development, funding training and courses beyond the Park's internal capacity.
- We explore grant opportunities for the betterment of the Park experience and conservation projects
Events and Community Involvement
- Friends regularly participate in Park events, often providing hands-on support such as staffing barbecues or assisting with logistics.
- We also offer volunteer time for activities including the animal census, propagation volunteer group, and food preparation.
- We’ve also co-hosted activities like art exhibitions during the Red Centre Bird Festival.
Communication and Engagement
- We publish Focus on Friends, an occasional newsletter promoting the activities of both the Friends and the Park.
- We host exclusive member events, including behind-the-scenes experiences like a special night tour of the Nocturnal House.
